Goathland is one of the best places in the North York Moors to combine a visit to a historic village with some beautiful countryside. Once you leave the village streets behind, footpaths lead across open moorland, through woodland and along the valleys surrounding Goathland.

One of the most popular walks is the route to Mallyan Spout, a spectacular waterfall hidden in the wooded valley below the village. But Mallyan Spout isn’t the only reason to put your walking boots on. There are several walks from Goathland that allow you to explore the surrounding North York Moors landscape.

Whether you’re looking for a short walk to a waterfall or a longer day out across the moors, Goathland makes an excellent starting point.

Mallyan Spout

Mallyan Spout is perhaps the best-known walking destination near Goathland.

The waterfall is located in a wooded gorge below the village, where Mallyan Spout Beck drops down towards the River Esk. The surrounding landscape is very different from the open moorland that Goathland is famous for, with woodland, rocky sections and the sound of the stream creating a particularly atmospheric walk.

The waterfall is especially impressive after periods of rainfall, when the volume of water flowing over the rocks increases.

The walk to Mallyan Spout is relatively short, but sections of the route can be uneven, muddy and slippery. Good footwear is recommended, particularly after wet weather.

Walking from Goathland to Mallyan Spout

The walk can be started from Goathland village and takes you downhill towards the valley.

As you leave the village, the landscape quickly becomes more rural. The route eventually reaches the wooded valley surrounding Mallyan Spout, where the path follows the beck towards the waterfall.

Take your time around the waterfall itself. The rocks and paths can be slippery, so this is not a place to rush.

The return journey involves walking back uphill towards Goathland, making the route more demanding than the distance alone might suggest.

Top tip: If you are visiting Goathland after heavy rain, expect muddy paths and take footwear with good grip.

How long does the Mallyan Spout walk take?

The time required depends on the exact route you take and how long you spend exploring the waterfall and surrounding woodland.

For most visitors, Mallyan Spout is suitable as a short countryside walk rather than a full-day hike. However, it can easily be incorporated into a longer walk around the Goathland and Egton Bridge area.

If you are planning a longer walk, take a map with you rather than relying solely on phone navigation. Mobile reception can be variable across parts of the North York Moors.

Goathland and the North York Moors

One of the great advantages of walking around Goathland is the variety of scenery.

From the village you can reach open moorland, wooded valleys, streams, waterfalls and traditional North Yorkshire countryside without having to travel far.

The surrounding North York Moors are particularly attractive in different seasons. Heather brings colour to the moors in late summer, while spring and autumn can provide completely different landscapes and light.

On a clear day, the higher ground around Goathland also provides excellent views across the surrounding countryside.

Longer walks from Goathland

If Mallyan Spout isn’t enough for you, Goathland is also a useful starting point for longer walks.

Experienced walkers can follow footpaths across the surrounding moorland and connect with routes towards places such as Grosmont, Egton Bridge and Beck Hole.

The famous Coast to Coast Walk also passes through the wider Goathland area, making the village an important stopping point for long-distance walkers.

Longer routes require more preparation. Check the weather before setting out, carry sufficient water and food, and take an appropriate map and navigation equipment.

Weather conditions on the North York Moors can change quickly, even when conditions in the village appear pleasant.

Goathland walking essentials

Before setting off on a walk from Goathland, it’s worth preparing for typical North York Moors conditions.

Wear suitable footwear

Even relatively short walks can become muddy after rain. Walking boots or shoes with good grip are preferable to trainers.

Take a map

A paper walking map is useful even if you normally use your phone for navigation. Don’t assume you will have a reliable mobile signal everywhere on the moors.

Check the weather

Wind, rain, mist and poor visibility can make walking on open moorland considerably more difficult.

Take water and snacks

There are places to eat and drink in Goathland, but once you’re out walking there may be nowhere to buy refreshments.

Allow extra time

Distances on a map don’t always tell the whole story. Steep sections, muddy paths, stiles and stops to enjoy the scenery can all increase the time required.

Can you walk to Mallyan Spout with children?

Mallyan Spout can be a great destination for a family visit, but parents should be aware that this is a countryside walk rather than a surfaced attraction.

The terrain around the waterfall can be uneven and slippery, particularly after rain. Young children should be supervised closely around the beck, rocks and steeper sections of the path.

For families, the walk can be a rewarding way to experience a very different side of Goathland beyond the village centre.

What else can you see while walking in Goathland?

One of the best things about walking from Goathland is that the journey is part of the experience.

You can combine a walk with a visit to Goathland Station, famous for its connection with the Harry Potter films and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The village itself is also worth exploring, particularly if this is your first visit. Goathland’s connection with the television series Heartbeat means many visitors recognise parts of the village from the programme.

You can therefore combine countryside, railway history, film locations and village life in a single visit.

Maps for walking around Goathland

If you’re planning to explore the area on foot, taking a proper walking map is a good idea.

An Ordnance Survey map covering the North York Moors is particularly useful if you intend to venture beyond the shorter walks around the village.

For visitors who prefer using their phone, digital mapping can also be useful, but remember to download maps before setting off if you are going somewhere with limited mobile coverage.

Is Goathland good for walking?

Absolutely. Goathland is an excellent base for exploring the North York Moors on foot.

The combination of Mallyan Spout, wooded valleys, open moorland, historic paths and nearby villages means there are walking opportunities for both casual visitors and more experienced walkers.

You don’t need to plan a huge hike to enjoy the countryside. Even a short walk from Goathland to Mallyan Spout can give you a completely different perspective of the area.

For longer walks, however, a little preparation goes a long way.

Plan your visit to Goathland

If you’re visiting Goathland for the first time, allow enough time to explore the village as well as the surrounding countryside.

You can visit Goathland Station, explore the village’s Harry Potter and Heartbeat connections, walk to Mallyan Spout, and enjoy the North York Moors scenery all in the same day.
