Nestled in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, Goathland Waterfall, officially known as Mallyan Spout, is a hidden gem that draws nature lovers, walkers, and photographers to the charming village of Goathland. With its breathtaking scenery, peaceful woodland trails, and cascading 70-foot waterfall, this is a must-see natural attraction when visiting the area.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful hike, a romantic escape, or a scenic spot for photos, Mallyan Spout offers an unforgettable outdoor experience in one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful settings.
Mallyan Spout is the tallest waterfall in the North York Moors, plunging around 70 feet (21 metres) down a rocky gorge. The waterfall is fed by the West Beck, a small stream that flows through lush, shaded woodland. Surrounded by moss-covered stones, ferns, and ancient trees, Mallyan Spout offers a picture-perfect view that changes with the seasons—from vibrant green in spring and summer to golden hues in autumn and dramatic, frosty scenes in winter.
The village of Goathland, famously known as the filming location for “Heartbeat” and Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter, is easily accessible by road and rail. The Goathland Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway provides a unique heritage train journey to the village.
From the village centre, reaching the waterfall is a pleasant walk. Start from the Mallyan Spout Hotel, where a well-marked public footpath leads directly into the woods. The trail takes you downhill through ancient woodland, following the sound of rushing water until you reach the falls. The route takes about 20–30 minutes one way, depending on pace and weather.
While the walk to Mallyan Spout is relatively short, it’s important to note that the terrain can be uneven and slippery, especially after rain. Sturdy footwear is highly recommended. Families with children, older visitors, and dog walkers all enjoy the route, but those with limited mobility may find the path challenging.
The route is part of a circular walk, which can be extended to explore other parts of the Esk Valley, including Beck Hole and Thomason Foss, another beautiful waterfall nearby.
The Waterfall and path to the Waterfall is open all year around with no restrictions to access. The Waterfall is completely free.
This is the nearest Car Park to the Waterfall. It is located near the village centre, approximately 5 to 10 mins walk away.
There are no facilities at the Waterfall, just a couple of benches or so on the path down to the Waterfall.
Be advised that the Waterfall is only suitable for people with full mobility, as it is a steep walk down the uneven (sometimes muddy) path. Once you reach the bottom, you will need to maneuver over and around small to medium-sized boulders for a very short length, 20/30 meters or so, to reach the fall.
After visiting Mallyan Spout, return to Goathland village to enjoy some local hospitality. The Mallyan Spout Hotel offers traditional Yorkshire meals, drinks, and a cosy setting to relax in. There are also quaint tearooms, gift shops, and a village store for refreshments and souvenirs.
Public toilets and parking are available near the centre of the village. During peak times, it’s advisable to arrive early to find a parking space.
